Destination Highlight: Bali
QUIP
One word association: Ornate. From temples to shanties, the level of detail is amazingly beautiful on almost every structure in Bali.
GETTING AROUND
Getting around southern Bali and Ubud is relatively simple via metered taxi. Uber is also available in most parts of southern Bali.
Traveling longer distances can be difficult. There is a new bus system, Kura-Kura Bus, which may prove to be useful. (*Note–I did not personally utilize the system*). Hiring a driver may be a worthwhile option, but finding a “good deal” can take time. We received quotes ranging from $25 USD for a one way trip for (1.25 hours away) to $80 to hire a driver for the day (12 hour block).
HIGHLIGHTS
The beaches (DUH!)
Bali has many, many beautiful beaches. You really cannot go wrong. Just make sure that the tides are favorable for swimming.
Nusa Lembongan Island
This small island and the reef off the coast of Bali is great for those seeking snorkeling and diving activities. Although the tours to get to the island are “pre-packaged” it isn’t a bad way to spend the day. We utilized Bali Hai Cruises.
Ubud
You can find a little bit of everything in this town, known as the cultural center of Bali. Markets, cooking classes, massages, shops, and art dominate.
Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary
Jalan Monkey Forest – Padangtegal – Ubud – Gianyar- Bali (80571)

For those that don’t mind getting up close and personal with nature, venture to the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud. The monkeys here roam rather freely and are cute, playful, and sometimes assertive.
Paon Cooking Class
This full day experience was wonderful. It includes a visit to the market, rice fields (with an explanation of the planting process), and ended with the class. Each person receives a cookbook with the recipes to take home.
